Ladybugs soar over Fairview 47-30

Before a vocal home crowd Thursday night, the Alva Ladybugs kept their winning streak going with a 47-30 victory over the Lady Jackets. Fairview went on a five point run before Alva put a score on the board. The first quarter ended in a tie at 7-7. The Ladybugs pulled ahead in the second to a 20-14 lead at the half. Alva stayed consistently ahead in the third, ending 32-23. The game ended in a 47-30 final for the Ladybugs.

First Half

Yellowjacket Taybor Gilchrist hit a two and a three to start the game for Fairview before Lexie Reihm put up two for Alva. Payton Jones stole the ball and hit a breakaway layup to put Alva within one at 5-4. Kenzie Doane stole the ball for Fairview but missed the layup. Alva had a turnover and Ally Robinson was fouled while shooting. She hit both free throws to put Fairview up 7-4.

Jones swished in a three to tie the score at 7. Each team had a turnover, and Jones tried for a half-court bucket at the buzzer but missed. The first quarter ended on the 7-7 tie.

Fairview started the second period with the ball but Rianna Clark stole it away. She was called for an offensive foul, and the Lady Jackets took possession. Kiera Case tried for and missed a Fairview basket. Fairview rebounded but Jones stole the ball. Kelsie Doane took back possession, but Fairview couldn't score.

Clark put the first score on the board in the second period. She was fouled and hit the free throw. Alva now led 10-7. Fairview missed a couple of baskets and two free throws. The Lady Jackets missed another attempt, and Alva missed one. Clark was called for a foul, and Alison Haight hit one of two free throws to narrow the Alva lead 10-8.

Clark's shot missed and Acacia Charles sailed a three-pointer that bounced off the rim. Reihm finally put two more up on a jump shot. Alva was up 12-8. Gilchrist was fouled and hit both free throws to narrow the lead to two. Jones missed a three. Reihm went for two but was fouled. She hit both free throws, and Alva led 14-10. Robinson scored two for Fairview, and Brooke Perez answered with two for Alva. Jones missed a basket, but Reihm scored on the put-back, and Alva was up 18-12.

Jones hit a basket for two and was fouled. She missed the free throw, but Alva led 20-12. Fairview made two unsuccessful trips to the basket, and Reihm missed on a three-pointer. Gilchrist finally hit a Lady Jacket basket. Jones lobbed a trey but it rolled around the rim and out. Gilchrist threw a wild shot and missed. The first half ended with Alva leading 20-14.

Second Half

Alva started off with possession, but Fairview stole the ball. Reihm fouled Case who made her free throw. Fairview scored another two to pull within five points. After a Fairview turnover, Jones went all the way for a layup and two points. Kenzie Craighead answered with two for the Lady Jackets. Alva's lead dwindled down to 22-19.

Reihm's jumper was no good. Gilchrist went for two and was fouled by Jones. She hit both free throws, and Alva led by only one at 22-21. Jones pulled the Ladybugs ahead with a basket. She was fouled and hit another from the free throw line. Alva now led 25-21. Case missed on a three-pointer, and Reihm sank a basket. She was fouled and hit the free throw. Alva was on top 28-21.

Haight hit two for Fairview. Jones tried for two and missed. Fairview slowed down the play to run off some time. Jones went for two and was fouled. She hit a free throw and lined up for the second. As Jones shot, the floor lights went out. When the lights returned, the crowd learned Jones missed her second try. Just before the quarter ended, Chloe Durkee hit an easy-looking three to put Alva in the lead 32-23.

Alva continued to pull ahead in the fourth quarter. Charles hit a basket, and Craighead answered for Fairview. Jones went in for two. Alva led 36-25. Haight missed a score, and Ladybug Brooke Perez made a basket. Reihm knocked away a Fairview pass, and Jones sank another two. Alva led by 15 at 40-25.

Fairview missed two basket attempts. Then Haight was fouled by Reihm. She made one of two free throws. Gilchrist fouled Durkee who missed the shot on a one-and-one. Doane's layup was short. Reihm missed her basket attempt, but Durkee hit the stick-back for two. Alva led 42-26.

Gilchrist was fouled while shooting. She hit both free throws. Jones followed with a layup, and the score was 45-28 with Alva leading. Clark put in two more for Alva on a Durkee assist. With Alva up 47-28, the Ladybugs sent in substitutes for a little playing time. Taylor Keenon scored two for Fairview and was fouled. She missed the free throw. Although there were several attempts no one scored again. The final was Alva 47, Fairview 30.

Wrap-Up

Jones was the leading scorer for Alva with 19. Reihm had 11, Clark six, Durkee five, Perez four and Charles two.

Craighead led the Fairview scoring with nine followed by Gilchrist with eight. Robinson and Haight tied with four each, and Case had three. Fairview now has a 4-3 record.

The Alva Ladybugs are 7-0 for the season. They travel to Perry tonight with tipoff at 6:30 p.m.
