Nescatunga Arts Festival was postponed, now canceled due to COVID-19 health concerns

• Artists and crafters encouraged to show their creations on Nescatunga.org

For the first time ever in the history of Alva's Nescatunga Arts Festival, what would be the 51st festival is canceled due to COVID-19 health concerns. The event that is traditionally the first Saturday in June was initially postponed until Aug. 8. Late last week the Nescatunga Arts and Humanities Council met and decided it was best to cancel the event this year.

“It’s definitely with heavy hearts that we cancel this year,” said Charla Parker, Nescatunga president and co-chair of the festival with Mary Hamilton. “At this time we just believe it’s better to be safe than sorry,” Hamilton said.

There's good news for artists, crafters and shoppers. Nescatunga member Valarie Case is working diligently to make a “virtual” festival shopping experience.

Artists and crafters will be able to post approximately 10 pictures of the items they create on Nescatunga.org., along with a paragraph about themselves and their business. That can include a link to their business whether it's on Facebook, etc. Case explains that artists and crafters can go to Nescatunga's Facebook page (www.facebook.com/nescatungaarts) and website (www.nescatunga.org) or email [email protected].

Using those images, Nescatunga will create a video and post it at least twice between September and early December for $10. You can mail a check payable to Nescatunga to Valarie Case/Nescatunga, 709 Oklahoma Blvd., Alva, OK 73717.

The deadline to submit pictures is Aug. 31. The purpose is so that shoppers can find the Nescatunga artists' and crafters' items for sale.

Nescatunga member April Ridgway is chairman of Alva's first-ever Sugar Show. The event, which highlights decorated cakes, cookies and cupcakes, was to be held in conjunction with the festival. Because of COVID, Ridgway said the Sugar Show will not happen until 2021. However, she continues planning for what she promises will be a welcomed event in Alva.

Working toward the virtual festival shopping experience, Case said, “We are trying to support the arts and our artists.”
