Turney resigns after 45-year career in education

Burlington School Board discusses property costs

 


Burlington Board of Education members Terry Graham, Robert Hill and Aaron Smith attended the May meeting. Also present were Dr. Stacey Croft, superintendent for the 2020-2021 fiscal year; Kevin Brown, superintendent for FY2021-22; Gerrett Spears, principal for FY2021-22, and Tracy Granados, minutes clerk. were also present. President Graham recessed and moved the meeting from the superintendent's office to the IETV room.

The board approved the resignation of Randy Turney. He's taught at Burlington for 25 years of his 45 years total in education. He's also a retired longtime coach. He continued as athletic director at Burlington in addition to teaching many subjects for junior high and high school students.

A quote from Justin Clark Home Renovations for renovations to the teacherage located at 702 6th Avenue was accepted by the board. Dr. Croft said the estimated quote is $18,950.

The board agreed to pursue a survey of the properties at 503 Myrtle St. and 205 Main St. with possible fence quotes after completion of the survey of the properties. Clarification of property addresses to be considered for the survey and installation of fencing was made.

In other business the board approved:

• an extended school year summer program for a student

• the contract for audit from Charles Carroll auditing firm for FY2020/2021 to be conducted during FY 2021/2022;

• offering student insurance with Student Resources for 2021/2022;

• Tom Cameron & Associates (TCA) quote for $5,916 to do Title programs and special education programs for the 2021/2022 school year;

• the contract with Angel, Johnston & Blasingame P.C. for school treasurer for the 2021-2022 school year;

• participation of Burlington Public School in the 2021-2022 E-rate program;

• school librarian Mica Andrews as the designated E-rate contact for Burlington Public School.

Temporary appropriations for the 2021/2022 fiscal year at the rate of 90% rate were also approved: General Fund – $4,729,740; Building Fund – $671,365; Child Nutrition Fund – $107,004.

The board tabled for a future meeting the discussion of whether to approve property and liability insurance with OSRMT for July1, 2021, to June 30, 2022,. Dr. Croft advised the board that the representative from OSRMT was not able to attend the meeting due to a last minute emergency. In the absence of the representative, Dr. Croft presented information regarding the current quote for coverage for FY2021-2022 from OSRMT. This is for property and liability insurance for the school. The board was advised that current insurance policy does not end until June 30, 2021, and that OSIG will be providing an insurance quote as well.

Dr. Croft informed the board that there is a need for additional Chromebooks to be purchased for next year to ensure that all students from 3rd grade to 12th grade have an electronic device for use at school. The board approved the quote on Chromebooks for the 2020-2021 school year. The cost is $7,611.25, which includes Google licensing.

The board approved encumbrances, change orders and warrants as follows: General Fund: Encumbrances 253-273 for $31,350.44, Change Orders for ($-319.34), and Warrants 955-1126 for $495,103.87; Building Fund: Encumbrance 5 for $145,000 and Warrant 15 for $705.98; Child Nutrition Fund: Encumbrance 18-19 for $640.67, Change Orders for -($131.52), and Warrants 126-157 for $17,073.43.

The April 2021 Activity report received board approval. They also approved the contract with Alcohol & Drug Testing Inc. (ADTI) for the 2021- 2022 school year

Due to limited home games and the inability to hold fundraisers in FY 2020-202, the board approved transfer of funds from the concession fund of the activity account to the athletics fund of the activity account.

The board held an executive session to discuss the support personnel listed on Exhibit A. Following the board hired all on the list Dr. Croft said.

She updated the board on the OSSBA August workshops for board members and also let them know about a summer conference June 3 for anyone who might have interest or need to attend further training.

Also offering the principal's report, Dr. Croft said that the BHS Graduation went well May 14 with six graduates receiving their diplomas. Eighth grade graduation was held on Tuesday, May 11 with 13 students promoting to high school. In addition, teachers had almost all completed their check-out process for FY 2020-202.
