Woods County commissioners purchase land from Farmers Co-op

First aid to Hamil before meeting

The routine of Monday morning meetings at the courthouse was interrupted May 24 when someone fell just down the hallway from the Woods County Commissioners’ office. The Tax Roll Corrections Board meeting was halted briefly as several people converged to help. Commissioner David Hamil was on his way to the office when he lost his footing and landed on the concrete floor.

Hamil said later he wasn’t sure if he slipped or if his knee just gave way. It happened fast. He was shaken up and bloodied both hands in the tumble. After the tax roll corrections board adjourned, County Emergency Management Director Ethan Feidling arrived with first aid supplies to bandage Hamil’s hands. The white wrappings led to some jokes about his resemblance to a boxer.

After the Woods County Commissioners meeting opened, someone mentioned that Monday was Hamil’s birthday. He acknowledged that was correct and said he hopes he makes it to the next one.

All of the commissioners were present for the meeting including Randy McMurphy, John Smiley and a somewhat damaged Hamil.

McMurphy read a long and complicated legal description of a piece of property the Farmers Cooperative is selling to Hamil’s District 1 of the county. The property is adjacent to the District 1 county shed and contains fuel tanks. The selling price is $25,000 plus a title closing fee of $200.

Charlotte Murrow and Kevin Pingelton from the Coop were present along with Jeff Mapes of Woods County Abstract. The commissioners approved the property purchase, but County Clerk Shelley Reed could not find the check. It was not located among all the checks being signed, so Reed went to her office. She returned sometime later saying there was some problem in getting it printed so it will be delivered later.

The commissioners approved a letter of commitment which is needed for an application for a CDC grant for the county health department.

A transfer of appropriations was approved with $23,308.92 being moved from Highway CIRB to Highway personal services for both District 1 and District 2. Another transfer approved was for $10,400 from the general fund commissioner personal account to the following personal accounts (for payroll): treasurer $1,400, county clerk $4,000 and health insurance benefits account $5,000; another $5,000 is being transferred from the sheriff part-time account to sheriff personal.

The commissioners approved declaring several items as surplus to be removed from inventory. A computer from the court clerk’s office will be returned to the state who bought it. A computer and a copier from the health department will be thrown in the trash after the state clears the memory. A radio for District 3 will be junked; Smiley said it’s from his pickup and it quit working. Two typewriters from the assessor’s office will be junked.

With Grant Gibson quitting for another job, the commissioner approved removing him and adding Chelsie Cummings as requisition officer in the county clerk’s office; Rachel Spellman was added as receiving officer.
