As we have seen, several former presidents have tried to return to the White House but only one – Grover Cleveland – managed to attain his old office a second time.
Three ex-presidents, however, found some sort of vindication for their damaged political careers by serving in lesser, but still significant, public service positions.
John Quincy Adams won the presidential election of 1824 although he finished second to Andrew Jackson in both the electoral and popular votes. The problem was that – unlike in most elections – no candidate had a majority of electoral votes.
