Satan and evil

January 14, 2022

Last week we looked at the Creation and the Creator beginning in Genesis. This week in Genesis we will look at Adam and Eve and the first encounter with evil, with Satan. Satan, in the form of a serpent, tempts Eve and she fails the test. Then Adam fails the test as well. From these encounters we learn about the nature of Satan.

First, we learn that Satan is a liar. Second, we learn that he is a deceiver. He will lie about the Word of God to deceive people. We also see this in the New Testament at the temptation of Christ. Satan says worship me, and Jesus quotes scripture to him, “You shall worship the Lord your God, and Him only you shall serve,”

We learn from these two encounters that Satan is evil and it matters how we respond to evil when we are tempted. There were consequences for Adam and Eve. There were consequences for Cain when he killed Abel. Throughout the Bible, man has faced consequences for disobedience. Satan has been evil from the beginning.

It is so important that we read and study the Bible. Satan will twist even the Holy Scriptures to deceive man. We need to read and understand what God says and who God is, so we will know when we are being deceived. We need to know the Word of God so we can give an answer as Jesus did, “It is written.” When faced with that, Satan departed. Knowing the Word is our best defense and our only hope.
