Overcome Evil with Good

“Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.” – Romans 12:21 (NIV)

This quote comes at the end of Romans chapter 12 where Paul is instructing the young church in Rome about how to interact with an often hostile outside world. He tells them to bless those who persecute them. He tells them not to take revenge. He tells them, “If your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink.” He then summarizes all that with this familiar and powerful, but often counter-intuitive phrase.
