Two aspects of American sports culture are relevant to this story. It is a basketball tale, and we are in the midst of an annual round ball frenzy known as “March Madness” that culminates in the crowning of several collegiate national champions each spring.
Secondly, sports fans have grappled for years with the issue of naming sports teams after Native Americans. Giving such nicknames to sports squads has long been a tradition in the United States, from the professional down to the local level.
