Weaver's experiment expands leather art horizon

Jim Weaver has been tooling leather for 20 years. The Edmond artist is showing his latest project, making prints from carved leather, at Graceful Arts Gallery in Alva.

Jim Weaver's interest in leather tooling began about 20 years ago because of his son. When his then-13-year-old son wanted to learn leather tooling, Weaver joined him in free classes at the Tandy Leather Shop. Weaver found his own enjoyment in the process and has been tooling leather ever since.

"As time went on, I kind of expanded into other types of leather crafts, western style leather crafts, into more variable subjects," he said. "About six years ago, I had the idea of trying to make block prints from the leather pieces."
