Former employee at Garnett's charged with embezzlement

Embezzlement charges have been filed against a former employee of a local business. According to court records, on April 21 about 7:55 a.m. Woods County Dispatch told Woods County Undersheriff Keith Dale he needed to go to Garnett Oil Company in Alva to take a report of an employee stealing money.

Dale met with David Kenyon, manager, who said Allen Dewayne Richey, an employee with Garnett’s since March 31, was seen on camera stealing money from the cash. Kenyon stated on April 15, the cash register was short $766.46 and on April 18 the cash register was short $369. Kenyon showed Dale video surveillance on the inside of the store which clearly showed Richey removing cash from the register on April 15 at approximately 1:31 p.m. and on April 18 at approximately 1:16 p.m. and putting the cash in his front left pocket.

Kenyon stated that on April 20, he discovered the cash was missing from the register, and when he began watching video surveillance, Richey immediately clocked out and left the store. Kenyon said he sent Richey a text message telling him he found video proof of stealing money, but Richey did not reply.

Dale went to Richey’s home address but was unable to locate him. He left a message with Richey’s girlfriend asking him to call when he got home.

Dale went back to Garnett’s to speak with Kenyon when he received a message from Richey at 8:19 a.m. which read, “Can you take my check is that and I will have the rest Friday. I used the money to pay bills. I’m sorry I will have the rest Friday.”

On April 21 about 8:50 a.m. Dale received a call from Richey who stated he was at his residence waiting for him. When Dale arrived, he observed Richey sitting outside his front door. He asked Richey why he took the money, and he said it was to pay bills. When Dale asked how much he took, he estimated $1,100. Dale took Richey back to Garnett’s to speak with Kenyon. When they arrived, Dale heard Richey apologize to Kenyon for stealing the money.

Richey was then placed under arrest and transported to the Woods County Sheriff’s Office to complete the book in process.

Allen D. Richey, 21, of Alva, has been charged with embezzlement, a felony.
