2023 Distinguished Goldbugs

The Alva Goldbug Education Foundation announces the honorees for the 2023 Distinguished Goldbugs celebration. In its eighth year, the event coincides with Goldbug football homecoming on Friday, Sept. 29. A luncheon will be held in the gymnasium at the Alva High School at 11:30 a.m. Honorees will ride in the traditional homecoming parade around the square at 2 p.m. and will be introduced during halftime of the Goldbugs game at Ranger Field. Bill Beierschmitt – Education (Class of 1963)

Bill Beierschmitt graduated Alva High School in 1963 and was named to that year’s Oklahoma All State football and basketball teams. He went on to earn a bachelor’s degree in business education from Oklahoma State University in 1967 and a master’s degree in business education with an emphasis in public school administration from OSU in 1972. Beierschmitt completed all doctoral course work in educational administration at OSU in 1987.

Beierschmitt is a retired member of the Oklahoma National Guard with 21 years of service at the rank of Master Sergeant. During that time, he was senior instructor for Non-Commissioned Officers School at the Oklahoma Military Academy.

Prior to employment with Rogers State University, Beierschmitt served as CFO for Oklahoma Department of Career and Technology Education, providing financial leadership for one of the nation’s most successful career and technology education systems. His tenure as Superintendent of Bartlesville Public Schools was the highlight of a 30-year career with that district. As superintendent, he provided leadership for a district of 13 schools with more than 6,500 students, 750 teachers and staff members, and a budget of more than $27 million. In addition to several administrative positions with the Bartlesville district, he was a classroom teacher specializing in business education at Sooner and Dewey High Schools, as well as coaching teams in basketball, baseball, and tennis.

Civic affiliations include past member of Board of Trustees of the Jane Phillips Medical Center, past member of Board of Trustees of Bartlesville Lincoln Elementary School Scholarship Fund (BLESS), past member of Bartlesville Area United Way and Bartlesville Library Trust Authority. Also, past board member of Bartlesville Area Chamber of Commerce, Bartlesville Public Schools Foundation, and Oklahoma Association of School Business Officials (OKASBO). Member of Leadership Oklahoma Class X and East Cross Methodist Church.

In addition to receiving national and statewide honors and achievements in education, he has presented research in educational leadership and administration at a variety of education and business conferences.

It was Mr. Beierschmitt’s honor to share commencement remarks with the Alva High School Class of 2014, which was the district’s 98th graduation ceremony. He was inducted into Bartlesville Education Hall of Fame on March 31, 2022.

Bill and his wife Vicki (also AHS Class of 1963) were blessed with two daughters and 12 grandchildren. Hobbies include sports, camping, hunting, fishing, and music.

Ron ‘Butch’ Holt – Posthumous (Class of 1959)

Butch Holt was born to Alfred and Lucille Holt and raised in Alva. His sister is Charlotte (Holt) Edwards. He loved his hometown. Daughter Beth relates that she and her brothers grew up hearing story after story about growing up in such a wonderful place. Every visit to Alva included a walking tour of the town. He would point out where he went to school and tell stories about all the shenanigans he would get into with his cousins and friends.

Holt played football, baseball and basketball for AHS all through school, where he graduated in 1959. He also played basketball for Northwestern Oklahoma State University.

After graduating college with a degree in accounting, Butch and his wife (Kay Lee, AHS Class of 1960) moved to Oklahoma City where he passed the CPA exam and began his career as a certified public accountant. Holt was a CPA-Auditor with Ernst and Ernst in the 1970s and '80s, a financial advisor with John Hancock and Met Life in the 1990s, and a financial/investment advisor with Bank of America in 2000.

Butch and Kay raised three children while he worked hard and climbed the corporate ladder. He served as an elder for First Christian Church in Oklahoma City (1970s to mid-1980s) and as a deacon for Southern Hills Disciples of Christ Church in Edmond (1990s). Butch passed in 2003.

Dr. Grayson Starbuck – Professional (Class of 2008)

Grayson Starbuck graduated from Alva High School in 2008. He then attended Northwestern Oklahoma State University earning a Bachelor of Science in biology in 2011. A Doctor of Physical Therapy from University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center followed in 2014. Additional professional educational pursuits were with the Manual Therapy Institute Fellow of the American Academy of Orthopedic Manual Physical Therapists Fall 2015 to Fall Spring 2019 and Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (NSCA) Summer 2015 to Present.

Dr. Grayson Starbuck, DPT, CSCS, FAAOMPT, is a highly accomplished and multifaceted professional with a wealth of expertise in the field of physical therapy, content creation, business consulting, and motor vehicle accident care. Possessing close to a decade of experience as a Doctor of Physical Therapy, he stands as a respected authority and sought-after advisor within the industry. Throughout his career, Starbuck has made invaluable contributions to multiple websites and companies as a prolific writer and influential speaker. His impactful work has significantly advanced the realms of medical care and business development, empowering numerous employees to break free from constraints that limit their creative and physical potential.

In addition to his extensive knowledge of physical therapy, Starbuck is also the founder and head physical therapist of Kinito Physical Therapy, a leading practice in Oklahoma City. He brings his expertise and passion for helping patients to provide exceptional care and support through innovative and up-to-date business strategies. Dr. Starbuck is a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) and a Fellow of the American Academy of Orthopedic Manual Physical Therapists (FAAOMPT), demonstrating his commitment to excellence and providing comprehensive care. His qualifications uniquely equip him to offer insightful analysis on various topics related to motor vehicle accidentcare and cash-based medicine.

In addition to his thriving clinical practice, Dr. Starbuck passionately shares his wealth of expertise through various dynamic platforms. As the creator and host of the enlightening YouTube channel "Move More Hurt Less," he dedicates himself to providing invaluable information and resources, empowering individuals to lead healthier lives. Furthermore, he serves as a valued content contributor for prominent websites such as http://www.DPC.Plus and http://www.CompAndCare.com, esteemed directories catering to medical and legal professionals. Through these platforms, he extends his knowledge to a wider audience, making a significant impact on the field.

Recognized for his exceptional expertise, Dr. Starbuck frequently assumes the role of presenter and mentor, making regular appearances on KFOR News Channel 4 for Health Check segments. His dedication to educating the public and raising awareness about health and well-being is commendable, showcasing his genuine commitment to making a positive difference.

Ira Dale Campbell – Honorary Goldbug

Ira Dale Campbell graduated from Beaver High School where he was very active in sports, winning two football state championships.

Campbell attended Independence Community College, Independence, Kansas, on an athletic scholarship. After attending one semester, he transferred to Northwestern Oklahoma State University, Alva, on an athletic scholarship (football and baseball), lettering in each sport for three years. Campbell graduated with a B.S. degree in biology and chemistry, later obtaining his Master’s degree in education.

Campbell’s Goldbugs career began when he married Kay Coffman (AHS Class of ’63) during a double wedding with her identical twin sister, Vicki, and her fiancé Bill Beierschmitt, May 1966. Ira Dale and Kay raised two Goldbugs: Leslie and Justin.

Just as Campbell was beginning his teaching career, he was called to serve in the military. He joined the National Guard and was sent to Ft. Polk Infantry Training, a facility preparing soldiers for combat in Vietnam. Campbell then went to Officer Candidate School – 45th Thunderbirds – and became a 2nd lieutenant. Later he was sent to Ft. Sill in 189 Field Artillery School. Campbell retired as captain of a Reserve Combat Training Unit.

In 1966, Campbell taught biology, chemistry and life sciences at Kingfisher. There, he was assistant football and basketball coach, as well as head baseball coach.

In 1967, Campbell became a Goldbug, teaching life sciences and coaching football and basketball at Alva Middle School. In the last four years of teaching in Alva, he was given the opportunity to coach high school football – go Goldbugs! After teaching approximately 2,700 students in science and coaching 1,350 students in athletics in a span of 27 years, Campbell retired in 1993.

Upon retirement, Campbell found time to enjoy the sport of rodeo. Team roping was his favorite event, and he won the Reserve National Champion in Team Roping in 1996. He continued his love of horses by training many colts and teams of Haflinger ponies.

Missing family who live in the Tulsa area, the Campbells moved move from Alva to Bartlesville in 2012 to be closer to family. They bought a small ranch in Bartlesville and run a Red Angus cow-calf herd.

In his closing thoughts, Campbell said, “I’m very proud to have been selected as Honorary Goldbug. Alva will always be home to us.”

Robert Regis Jakubek Jr. – Business (Class of 1982)

Jake (also known as Bobby) was born in Sterling, Colorado, and currently resides in Sterling, Virginia. He is a 1982 graduate of Alva High School and graduated from Oklahoma State University in 1986.

He enlisted in OKARNG in May 1980 through August 1986 (E1-E6). Jakubek was commissioned for State Officer Candidate School, Oklahoma Military Academy, in August 1986. He was active duty, AGR Program, 1986-2009 (Tours at National Guard Bureau, Washington, DC, Augusta, Georgia, Nashville, Tennessee), (2LT – LTC) Commanded at the Company and Battalion levels. Following positions were Defense Industry Partner: 2008-2013 (BAE Systems, Inc., Allan Vanguard Inc., Safariland Inc.,); Chief of Staff, National Guard Association of the US, Washington DC, May 2013 – January 2022; Vice President, National Guard Association of the US, Washington, DC, January 2022 – Present.

Professional Associations and Memberships: National Guard Association of the United States (NGAUS), Association of the US Army (AUSA), United States Field Artillery Association (USFAA), Signal Corps Regimental Association (SCRA), Armed Forces Communication & Electronics Association (AFCEA), Military Officers Association of America (MOAA), The Reserve Officer Association (TROA), Association of Old Crows (AOC), America Legion, OCS Alumni Association, National Guard Association of Tennessee (NGAT), National Guard Association of Oklahoma (NGAOK), National Guard Bureau Alumni Association (NGBAA), National Defense Industrial Association (NDIA).

Robert Jakubek retired as a lieutenant colonel from the Army National Guard after 28 years and 10 months of service, of which the last 24 years were active duty. Since retiring from active service Robert has worked for Defense Industry Partners and NGAUS in which he has supported both the 54 States and Territories of the Army and Air National Guard for over 43 years.

His significant assignments include (1) Vice President, Business Development General Conference, National Guard Association of the US, Washington DC (2021-Present) where he was responsible for planning and overseeing the organization’s annual conference with average attendance of 4000-5000 each year. (2) Chief of Staff, National Guard Association of the U.S., Washington DC (2013-2021) where he was responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations of the National Guard Association of the U.S. full-time staff. NGAUS is the nation’s oldest military association that advocates for better equipment and training by educating Congress on the Guard requirements. NGAUS mission is to support the 450,000 current Guard men and women, their families, their employers, and all Guard retirees. (3) Director, Business Development for Allen Vanguard., Washington, DC (2012-2013) where his responsibilities covered the growth and sustainment of Allen Vanguard’s portfolio of services and products as one of the global leaders in defeating terrorist and extremist threats. (4) Manager, National Guard Requirements, BAE Systems, Electronics, Intelligence, and Support, Federal, Civil, State Requirements Team. Washington, DC (2008-2012) where he was responsible for overseeing all areas in the Forward Deployed Business Development areas relating to the National Guard for BAE Systems. (5) Executive Officer/Secretary to the General Staff, Joint Force Headquarters, Tennessee National Guard Nashville, Tennessee (2007-2008) and was responsible for all Congressional and Gubernatorial correspondence for the State Adjutant General, overseeing the accomplishment of the State’s Senior Leadership Directives.

Also, as Regimental Training Administrative Officer/Regional Training Institute, Tennessee Army National Guard Smyrna, Tennessee (2001-2007), Jakubek worked the administrative and operational management of the States School house for over 1,500 soldiers yearly to include commanding the Officer Candidate School, General Studies, and Field Artillery Battalions. In his assignment at US Army Signal Center, FT Gordon, Georgia (1993-1996), Jake assisted in integrating communication systems into the Army National Guard Signal Corps, was focal point for the Signal Center Commander on all communication and automation efforts for the Army National Guard and assisted with the development of the Warfighter Information Network (WIN) concept. During his time with National Guard Bureau/Army National Guard Readiness Center, Washington, D.C. (1986-1993, 1996-2001), his duties included Army Total Force Integrator, Signal Corps Combat Developer/Organizational Integrator, Information Management Officer and Project Management Team Leader. When initially enlisted, Jakubek served the Oklahoma National Guard, B-Battery, 1st BN, 189th Field Artillery Battalion, Alva, (1981-1986) as an Enlisted Cannon Crewman, E1 – E6, performing all duties of a 13B Cannon Crewman.

Robert R. Jakubek Jr. has been married to Cheerie, a private school administrator, for 37 years. Cheerie is a native of Stillwater. They have a son, Garrett, a Nike product and on-boarding specialist. Their daughter, Kennedy, is a K-6th grade teacher and girls’ soccer coach. Jake’s hobbies are golf, cruising and all things Disney.

Karen Bishop Koehn – Humanitarian (Class of 1976)

Karen Bishop Koehn graduated from Alva Public Schools in 1976 and went on to obtain a Bachelor of Science in education in 1980 with a Standard K-8th Grade Teaching Certificate from Northwestern Oklahoma State University. She holds a Master of Education dgree in guidance and counseling, also from NWOSU.

Prior to becoming the guidance counselor at Northwest Technology Center, Alva, in 1992, Koehn held the following positions: Elementary Educator (fourth grade) with Tonkawa Public Schools, Elementary and Secondary Guidance Counselor with Cherokee Public Schools, High School Guidance Counselor with Alva Public Schools. She has also been an adjunct instructor for evening Masters Level Guidance and Counseling Classes at Northwestern Oklahoma State University.

Trevor Meier – Athletics (Class of 2001)

Trevor Meier was born and raised in Alva, Oklahoma. As a Goldbug student athlete, he played all four major sports. He was a state qualifier in track for three years. Trevor played varsity baseball for three years where he excelled at pitcher, catcher, and shortstop. He was selected as All-Conference after his senior campaign. In football, Trevor never left the field during his sophomore season while his brother was a senior quarterback. He excelled at safety on defense, special teams and ended the season in the Top 5 in Class 3A for catches as a wide receiver. As good as Trevor was in all sports, basketball was his best sport. He was All-Conference for two seasons, All-State his senior year, scored over 1,000 points in his career. He graduated with the AHS Class of 2001.

Meier’s collegiate athletic career began at the University of Tulsa before graduating from Oklahoma City University in 2006. Trevor was a team member and experienced multiple WAC and SAC conference titles. He played three seasons at the University of Tulsa and two seasons at Oklahoma City University. Trevor was a part of two NCAA tournament teams at Tulsa and two NAIA tournament teams at OCU. He was an All-Conference performer at OCU after his junior season played in the NAIA national title game his senior year.

In 2008, Trevor began his insurance career as a marketing representative for Federated Insurance in Boise, Idaho, after an 11-month insurance training program in Owatonna, Minnisota. He transferred to a territory in Oklahoma in 2011 where he served his clients for seven years. In 2018, he made a change to Rich & Cartmill Insurance Agency specializing in commercial property, auto, liability, and workers comp insurance.

Trevor met his wife, Kenzi, at OCU, and they have been married for 15 years. They have two great kids, Tinley and Kellan Meier. In his free time, he enjoys attending his kids’ sporting events, hanging out with friends, and the occasional round of golf.
