Firsthand lesson in water main break

Letter to the Editor

October 20, 2023

When you turn on the tap for a glass of water and nothing flows, what's really happening? I, personally, had a firsthand lesson in understanding a water line main break from 9:30 PM to 3:30 a.m. During this time, I witnessed some of the most dedicated individuals tirelessly working to ensure that Alva's citizens would wake up to running water.

The entire crew impressed me Gary Perks, Jay Davis, Les Heath, Ronnie Hoskins, Drake Lewis, Travis Lehl, Steve Foster, Zane Schurter and Sage Lamuyon and Grant Taylor with the Alva Fire Department, even though they were drenched, fatigued, and shivering from the cold, their positive attitude remained unwavering. The creativity and collaborative efforts of the team to resolve the issue were nothing short of amazing.

City Manager Steve Ford exhibited true leadership by personally driving to Woodward at midnight to acquire the necessary replacement part. He exemplified that leadership means being ready to work, even at 12 a.m. on a Saturday night, to ensure Alva's citizens are cared for.

Tatum Lehl, an office employee, went the extra mile by providing the team with refreshments from Sonic and making herself available for any assistance they required. Lehl Water Well Drilling also contributed equipment and manpower to fix the leak.

For someone like me, with limited knowledge of waterlines, this situation became an opportunity to learn. My initial hesitation about investing $100,000 in a mini excavator vanished as I witnessed its invaluable contributions to resolving the crisis.

I urge our citizens, the next time you encounter someone wearing a City of Alva shirt, take a moment to express your gratitude. Every city employee plays a vital role in maintaining our community.

Moreover, when you're frustrated by a temporary water shortage, remember the dedicated individuals working diligently to restore service. They are the unsung heroes ensuring our city keeps running smoothly.
