Alva Arena Authority to interview construction managers

November 10, 2023

In a meeting Tuesday, the Alva Arena Authority voted to interview candidates for construction manager at their Dec. 5 meeting. Two companies submitted proposals that were discussed at length in executive session.

Architect Glen Calvert is to be at the December meeting to assist in the interviews, and he was directed to contact the companies to set up appointment times. The interviews will be held in closed executive session.

As vice-chairman, Mike Hood led the meeting in the absence of Chairman Gregg Glass. Other trustees present were Dr. Janet Cunningham, Melinda Barton, Darrell Kline, Todd Holder and Daren Slater.

Secretary Sonja Williams introduced Jalynn Fausnaugh, a member of the Northwestern Oklahoma State University rodeo team from Ohio. Williams’ employment keeps her from having time to do research so Fausnaugh is being given that task. She was already providing members with information about hosting youth rodeos after visiting her aunt and uncle who have an arena in Ohio.

Holder gave the treasurer’s report showing $172,166.07. He also recommended hiring Jana Walker to provide a required audit of the authority. Holder said there aren’t a lot of accountants who are familiar with auditing non-profit entities like the arena authority. He said Walker has that experience. She lives in Freedom and works out of Woodward. The trustees voted to approve Walker for auditory services for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2023.

Holder reported he is in serious talks with a bank for a $20 million loan for the arena construction.

Calvert and the trustees discussed a January date to finish the design of the arena so bid specifications can be finalized.
