The Burlington Robotics Team won the Best Award at the Heartland BEST competition on Nov. 4, as well as the Spirit and Sportsmanship Award. The team qualified to compete at Regionals held in Denver in early December.

Red Ribbon Week was held Oct. 25-31 this year at Burlington Public Schools. Red Ribbon Week's purpose is to encourage students to stay drug free. The themes for the week include Camo Day, Favorite Team Day, Hawaiian Day, and Nerd Day. The week ended with students wearing their costumes on Halloween with the theme "Say Boo to Drugs." A lot of students participated in Red Ribbon Week.

The winning door for the 7th-12th grade during Red Ribbon Week was the senior class. The door was created on Mrs. Bird's classroom. It featured the Evil Queen from Snow White handing out poison apples (different drugs) and indicated that the seniors are the "fairest of them all" because they are drug free.

There was also a door challenge on who created the best door with a "Staying Drug Free" theme. The seniors won the door challenge for 7th-12th with their portrayal of the evil queen from Snow White. For the elementary classes, Pre-K won with their blacklight door.

Red Ribbon Week started nationally in 1985 to raise awareness about drug prevention. Burlington counselor Christa Fraire was the host of Red Ribbon Week. Fraire's favorite day was Camo Day because it was an easy day for people to participate. She said she thought this year was a success but believes there is always room for improvement. If she could change one thing about Red Ribbon Week, it would last more than just one week because students need guidance every day.
