Thrifting

December 22, 2023

Thrifting, the art of scouring second-hand stores for unique treasures, has evolved from a budget-friendly necessity to a sustainable and fashionable lifestyle choice. Rooted in the concept of recycling, reducing and reusing, more consumers are picking secondhand items for gifting this year. I have always said, “I would rather receive a used item of quality than something I don’t need and can’t love.”

Ebay has made that possible in the past, but now other platforms are seeing the demand for secondhand items and preowned is driving a new market where 85% of Americans have bought or sold used items over the last year. Major fashion brands are recognizing that secondhand is as much a necessity as it is an opportunity.

Thrifting transcends economic boundaries, attracting a diverse array of individuals who enjoy the thrill of the hunt and the joy of discovering a hidden gem. Bargains still exist, but the internet shows values in real time where a “blue book” isn’t as reliable as actual sales.

Do you remember the Avon bottle and Beanie Babies price guides? Flashback! Secondhand clothes that arrived after the May 5th tornado became a second disaster, but today shoppers appreciate one-of-a-kind outfits, often assembled with premium brands.

Since 11.3 million tons of textile go into landfills yearly, thrifting makes environmental sense. Some consumers will only buy something new, but a “hybrid” wardrobe is a “chic” combination. As Nicki said, “It’s not where you bought it, it’s how you wear it.” Makes sense to me.
