In an article from the Wall Street Journal, Jason Gay recalls his year as an assistant youth soccer coach. As a doting grandparent, I have made many of the same observations. The objective of youth sports is to get your children some exercise while someone else yells at them.

There are two styles of competition: The recreational league is for parents who want to drop kids off to run errands and relax. The traveling league is for those who enjoy bad coffee, deadlines and building up credit card points.
