Share Medical Center 'in really good shape'

March 29, 2024

“We’re in really good shape year to date,” said Dr. Bo Hannaford, chairman of the Alva Hospital Authority. He made the comment after Chief Financial Officer Angelica Brady reported on Share Medical Center finances during the regular meeting on Tuesday. Hannaford thanked Brady for some new graphs that had been requested by the finance committee. “If you really look at the reports, you’ll see a lot of positive things,” he said. One of those is the favorable comparison of current year-to-date data compared to last year and even back to 2019 pre-Covid, Hannaford said.

In other positive news, Brady said the hospital is getting unbilled days down to near the target level of six days. “Bills are going out regularly,” she said. Although Share Medical Center showed a loss of $76,397 for February, Brady said they’re still positive for the year to date. “This month was just a little bit off,” she said.

At the end of February, accounts receivable were $3,904,921, a decrease of $45,040 from January. The accounts payable balance was $1,520,752, representing 111.5 days of operating expenses.

Gross patient revenue for February was $2,132,349, an increase of $40,697 compared to January. Total patient days for February were 65 compared to 47 the previous month. Total clinic office visits were 1,908 compared to 1,871 in January.

In addition to Hannaford, trustees present for the meeting were Connor Martin, Greg Bowman, Dr. Halah Simon, Dr. Callie Mosburg, Dr. Kenneth Brown and Dr. Scott Burk.

CEO Report

Kandice Allen, chief executive officer of Share Medical, reported that remodeling and freshening up is continuing on the hospital space intended for the new Senior Life Solutions outpatient mental health service.

New surgeon Dr. Addison Roberts had his first surgery day on March 12 with a clinic day set for March 26. Dr. Gregg, who has been doing endoscopies twice a month, is planning to retire. Dr. Roberts has indicated that he or one of his surgical partners from Tulsa will step in to cover those services.

Dr. Joe Tupper is staying busy with orthopedic surgery and clinics.

The new mammography equipment has arrived and been installed. Karlee Dietz, RT(R), has completed her training and the hospital began doing exams on Monday.

Allen said the hospital recently hired a practitioner for Urgent Care.

Medical Staff

Dr. Burk reported on the medical staff executive committee meeting. The trustees voted to approve the reappointment to allied staff of Steve Madrid, PA-C in family medicine.

Share Convalescent Home

Kelly Parker, administrator for Share Convalescent Home, reported census was up slightly in February compared to January. Medicaid days showed a slight increase while skilled nursing days were down.

“We continue to work with Beadles’ folks and Dayna Jordan (from Beadles) is now full-time director of nurses for us,” Parker said. “It’s going well. We’ve had some things we’re still trying to get used to with each other and everybody else in the building,” He said the main thing is they are taking care of people. “Our challenges are more in style, how we do things. It’s been a relatively smooth transition,” he added.

Parker said March 17 was the last time they needed to contract for agency healthcare workers. This will lower their payroll costs.

Looking at finances, Parker said gross patient revenue for February was $235,303, which was a $13,693 decrease from January. Total patient days for February were 942 compared to 999 the previous month. Salaries and wages of $98,156 for February was a decrease of $19,466 compared to January. The convalescent home had a net income of $40,672 for February.

The Homestead

Parker said The Homestead was a little bit down on total paid nights compared to January. He said some people moved out because they needed a greater level of care than what The Homestead offers. However, there have been some retirees expressing interest in moving in.

After quite a bit of work was done on some apartments, a couple of them have been rented.

Parker said The Homestead has a new activities director: Merla Sims, who transferred from the nursing home. “She loves it over there, and they’re loving her,” he said. “If you know Merla, you know why. Merla’s pretty fantastic.”

Parker went over financials that showed The Homestead with a net income of $9,824 for the month.

SMC Foundation

The SMC Foundation board will be meeting in early April, Parker said. They have some donations that need to be distributed to the hospital. They will also be looking at scholarship applications for the Alva Hospital Authority scholarship.
