America’s love of the automobile dates back to the early 20th century. The horseless carriage was born, and Henry Ford revolutionized mass production making them affordable to the masses.

The number of vehicles in operation has steadily increased from 4,190 in 1900 to 284 million last year. One might think that the increase was due to second or third vehicles, but instead it is due to an increase in the number of households. According to David Harrison in Wall Street Journal, the average number of vehicles per household is holding steady at 2.2.
