  • The God of Thorns

    John Clapp, Baptist Bible Church|Oct 14, 2022

Thorns are painful. They are a good deterrent from gardening and landscaping! The Bible uses thorns as a metaphor for adversity, pain and trials. Adam was told that thorns would be a part of his life until his death. All of mankind struggles with thorns. They can be a simple poke or a deep wound. We all experience pain. We all experience thorns. People often become desperate in their pain. Many try to comfort themselves with addictive behaviors. Some turn their thorns into anger toward their loved ones and often toward the Lord. What if I told...

  • Holiday meals

Steve Hamm, College Hill Church of Christ|Oct 14, 2022

The time is fast approaching for the holidays like Thanksgiving and Christmas in which we all stuff our faces and bellies until we are hurting in such a beautiful way. Food is a wonderful, satisfying, aromatic pleasure that we as humans can’t ever get enough of. It’s really interesting that God put a meal with every worship festival He commanded in the Old Testament, the Feast of the Passover, Feast of Unleavened Bread, the Feast of the First Fruits, the Feast of the Trumpets, etc. When Jesus shows up on earth, he continues the use of food when...

  • Paper copies

    Arden Chaffee|Oct 14, 2022

In my opinion, leaving a paper trail is still important. As CFO of our business, I like copies. Technology experts disagree: “You don’t need to print the internet,” and electronic transactions leave records. Emails are proof of that but just like magazines and newspapers, I like something concrete to hold and in the case of records, to file. My accountant refers to “the shoebox method.” She claims that is how some of her customers present their tax receipts. I have advanced past that to multip...

  • Random Thoughts

    Roger Hardaway|Oct 14, 2022

Oct. 12, 2022, was the 100th birthday of a man named Borden Deal. Unfortunately, he did not live to celebrate it, having died of a heart attack in January 1985 at the age of 62. Borden Deal was a writer of quality fiction – novels and short stories. He was born in Mississippi to a poor couple who had their farm taken from them during the Great Depression. The family’s precarious financial situation was made even worse when Borden’s father died in an automobile accident in 1938 when Borden was o...

    Marione Martin|Oct 14, 2022

Back when an audit revealed funds designated for the Alva Regional Airport had been spent on City of Alva general fund expenses, the city made an agreement with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to pay back those funds, with interest, over a ten year period. Most of those airport funds were from FAA grants to be used in future airport project. At the Alva Airport Commission meeting Monday night, Mayor Kelly Parker said that payback may be completed this year. He said the city...

  • No injuries reported in four-vehicle crash

    Marione Martin|Oct 14, 2022

It’s unusual to see four vehicles involved in a wreck, but that’s what happened Monday, Oct. 3, on College Boulevard. The collisions occurred at 4:44 p.m. at Hart Street which borders the Lincoln Elementary School playground. The Alva Police Department traffic report says three vehicles were traveling north on College Boulevard in the inside lane. The lead vehicle, a 2017 Dodge Charger driven by Jaci Faith Oakley of Alva, stopped to make a left turn to the west onto Hart Street. Tatum Lee Winters of Alva in a 2020 Hyundai Tucson was dir...

  • Driver taken to hospital after vehicle strikes light pole

    Marione Martin|Oct 14, 2022

A light pole was the most obvious casualty in a one vehicle wreck last Wednesday, Oct. 5, but the driver was also taken to the hospital. According to a report from the Alva Police Department, Derek Wade Heaton of Alva was driving a 2017 Chevrolet Silverado westbound on Oklahoma Boulevard about 8:20 a.m. when he blacked out. His vehicle swerved to the right, striking a light pole. Heaton then pulled into a parking lot near the scene and was checked by Alva EMS. Heaton was taken to the emergency room by private vehicle. • Republican Kris Kobach aims to rebrand in Kansas AG race

    JOHN HANNA|Oct 14, 2022

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — Kris Kobach, the Kansan with a national reputation as a hardline provocateur on immigration and voter ID laws, is trying to rebrand himself as a calmer, steadier voice in his comeback bid for elective office. Republicans hope the candidate for Kansas attorney general is a "new" Kobach. Many of them say he's staying more on message with a better organized campaign after losing the 2018 race for Kansas governor and a 2020 U.S. Senate primary. Both of those losses were chalked up to disorganized campaigns and Kobach being too a...

  • Germany: Man bites police dog, woman punches officer

    Oct 14, 2022

BERLIN (AP) — Police in Germany said Friday they detained a man for resisting arrest and biting a service dog. Officers were called to a dispute between two 29-year-old men and a 35-year-old woman in the western town of Ginsheim-Gustavsburg shortly after midnight. The trio acted in an "extremely aggressive and uncooperative" fashion, police said in a statement. Officers were only able to overpower one of the men by using "massive physical force," it said. "In the course of resisting arrest the 29-year-old man also bit a police dog," the s...

  • Justice Dept. seeks end to arbiter's review of Trump docs

    ERIC TUCKER|Oct 14, 2022

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Justice Department asked a federal appeals court on Friday to shut down the work of an independent arbiter who was appointed last month to review documents seized during an FBI search of former President Donald Trump's Florida estate. The appeal is the latest salvo in weeks of litigation over the scope of duties of the arbiter, also known as a special master, who was assigned to inspect the records taken in the Aug. 8 search of Mar-a-Lago and weed out any that may be protected by claims of legal privilege. The special m...

He was hospitalized and in critical condition following his arrest, but authorities have not said how he was injured. Patterson said Friday that police haven't determine...

  • Families face man charged in killings of 22 elderly Texans

    JAMIE STENGLE|Oct 14, 2022

DALLAS (AP) — A week after the second conviction of a man charged in the deaths of 22 elderly women, family members of those he is accused of killing gathered at a Dallas courthouse Friday to face him. In Ellen French House's victim impact statement, she told Billy Chemirmir, who was wearing a striped jail uniform, that she wanted him to see two photos of her mother: one of Norma French alive, the other after the 85-year-old was killed. "This is my beautiful mother," House said as she displayed the first photo. "This is my mother after you p...

  • Putin calls his actions in Ukraine 'correct and timely'

    SABRA AYRES|Oct 14, 2022

KYIV, UKRAINE (AP) — Russian President Vladimir Putin said Friday he expects his mobilization of army reservists for combat in Ukraine to be completed in about two weeks, allowing him to end an unpopular and chaotic call-up meant to counter Ukrainian battlefield gains and solidify his illegal annexation of occupied territory. Putin — facing domestic discontent and military setbacks in a neighboring country armed with increasingly advanced Western weapons — also told reporters he does not regret starting the conflict and "did not set out to de...

  • Trump's subpoena and what's next for the Jan. 6 panel

    MARY CLARE JALONICK|Oct 14, 2022

WASHINGTON (AP) — In an extraordinary step, the House Jan. 6 committee has voted unanimously to subpoena former President Donald Trump — a final effort to get the full story of the Capitol insurrection as the panel wraps up its work by the end of the year. Trump still does not acknowledge the "former" in front of "president," and he has been relentlessly hostile to the investigation. He called it a "charade and a witch hunt" in a letter to the committee on Friday — but notably did not mention the subpoena or say whether he would comply with...

Energy Minister Fatih Donmez said a preliminary assessment indicated the explosion was likely caused by firedamp — a reference to flammable gases found in...
