Acting Warden (later appointed warden) Becky Guffy welcomes the Oklahoma Department of Corrections Board to Alva.

The Oklahoma Department of Corrections Board was officially welcomed to Alva Wednesday by (Acting) Warden Becky Guffy. Later in the meeting she was named the full warden at Bill Johnson Correctional Center (BJCC).

Guffy said she wanted to introduce the Alva Community Citizens Advisory Committee members who were in attendance. She said this committee deserves a very special thank you that has led to the success of BJCC, and she appreciated how the committee has stood behind the facility in good times and in bad.

She said she is a true believer in the most intensive substance abuse program in the State of Oklahoma, emphasizing, "We are pretty proud of that!"

Three Program Strategies

Guffy explained there are three program strategies at BJCC.

The first is the Delayed Sentencing Program that provides a treatment path for first-time offenders between the ages of 18 and 22. "We are proud to report a 74 percent success rate, as compared to a 16 percent success rate nationwide," she said.

The second program is the Regimented Treatment Program that provides a comprehensive approach to substance abuse and cognitive behavior. "The primary goal is to foster personal growth by changing the person's lifestyle by using the therapeutic community model," she said.

The third program is the Intermediate Revocation Program, which is the newest program at BJCC. Guffy said, "We provide housing and programmatic services for individuals who have violated provisions of a deferred or suspended sentence while on probation."

Education

The warden told how much pride the employees have that education is part of the mission. She said, "All offenders who have not completed their secondary education are required to attend education classes. Our education department averages 300 GED graduates annually."

Waiting List

In 2015, the waiting list of those offenders assigned by judges to BJCC numbered 250. Guffy said, "With help from Northwestern Oklahoma State University, who is our contract provider, we have improved our completion rate by processing out an average of 67 inmates per month. Today, our wait list is zero!"

She concluded, "I'm very proud of what this staff accomplishes every day. We maintain standards of excellence that support the agency mission."
