Motorist reports possible intoxicated driver

August 23, 2017

A motorist reported a possible intoxicated driver in the very early hours of Saturday, Aug. 12, in Alfalfa County. Deputy T.J. Rockenbach was sent to check on the vehicle and occupants. The witness reported the vehicle was swerving from side to side on the road in front of him, slowing and speeding up. He stated the car almost hit an oncoming semi truck head on as well as another oncoming vehicle. The witness also said he watched the car drive into the opposite lane of traffic numerous times.

Court records show when Rockenbach arrived he found a black Nissan Altima in the south ditch of Hughes Road about 100 yards west of County Road 570. A woman identified as Kristin Diane Straily was sitting in the driver’s seat with the motor running. Straily said she was from Tulsa and was taking her daughters out to watch the meteor shower.

Rockenbach noted Straily was speaking “with a thick tongue.” He asked her to step out of the car and to provide her driver’s license. She grabbed her wallet and exited the vehicle. According to Rockenbach, as Straily stood up she staggered forward almost falling onto the road and while she looked for her license in her wallet, she appeared to be unsteady on her feet.

Deputy Rockenbach questioned her about ingesting alcohol or illegal drugs, but she denied both. She said she had some prescription meds in her possession and had taken one of them as prescribed around 11 a.m.

Straily agreed to take a field sobriety test but did not perform well. She gave permission for her car to be searched, but Rockenbach found nothing illegal. He placed her under arrest for driving under the influence.

The deputy contacted DHS to pick up the woman’s two minor children. The youngest child, age 5, was not in a child safety seat and there was no child safety seat in the vehicle.

Kristin Diane Straily, 34, of Tulsa has been charged with child endangerment by driving under the influence, a felony. She is also charged with a misdemeanor of driving a motor vehicle while under the influence of drugs as well as being issued a traffic citation for failure to use child passenger restraint system.
