Sunday afternoon wreck results in power outage for Kiowa and Burlington

October 9, 2019

Sunday afternoon about 4:10, a single vehicle accident occurred 1 mile northeast of Kiowa, Kansas, on KS-2 at mile post 13.5. The crash resulted in a temporary power outage for the towns of Kiowa and Burlington.

KHP Trooper Charley Brattin worked the accident. He said that Cullen Reynolds, 20, of Belle Plaine, was driving a 2008 Toyota Tundra northeast on KS-2. The vehicle went off the roadway to the right and into the ditch. The vehicle then went airborne and landed on all four tires before striking a power pole. The trooper said the vehicle continued northeast where it came to rest in the ditch. Brattin noted that the Toyota had a 2016 Polaris ATV in the bed.

Hannah R. Evans, 20 of Wellington, was a passenger in the vehicle. Trooper Brattin said both had possible minor injuries and were treated and released at the Kiowa District Hospital. Many emergency vehicles from Kiowa raced to the scene including EMS, fire department, sheriff's department, etc.

One electric pole fell on another causing the outage, the trooper said. Burlington has a generator that kicks in after their power is off for only 10 seconds. Electric companies made repairs and Kiowa had power back within about one hour. Marci Hyde said that Burlington's power returned in about one-and-a-half hours.
