OVERLAND PARK, Kan. (AP) — Despite disruptions caused by the coronavirus, Johnson County Community College has hired a new president.

The college's Board of Trustees on Thursday selected Andrew Bowne, who is currently senior vice president of Indiana's 18-campus community college system. He will become president in July.

Most of the board members joined the meeting remotely, with only board chairman Greg Musil and retiring college President Joe Sopcich in the room for the meeting, which was live-streamed for the public, The Kansas City Star reported.

Bowne was one of four finalists selected last month from a pool of 71 applicants to lead the Overland Park campus, college officials said.

Like most colleges and universities in Kansas, Johnson County Community College will transition to online-only classes when the semester resumes after spring break.

Last week, Johnson County health officials announced a woman associated with the school tested positive for COVID-19. No further information about the woman's connection to the school was released.
