VELMA KATHRYN MAYFIELD

Velma Mayfield, a former resident of Alva, Oklahoma, passed away from heart failure on June 29, 2022, in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Velma was born to George and Addie Keck on November 14, 1920, at the family farm north of Alva. Velma attended Capron schools. She then attended Northwestern State College (now University), majoring in commerce, and earned a B.S. degree in 1941. During her student days, Velma served as an officer of Sigma Sigma Sigma and Theta Phi Beta sororities, was secretary of the MacDowell Music Club and Student Council, and was on the Dean's Honor Roll. Velma was one of ten students at NWSC listed Who's Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges 1940-41.Velma taught school for two years after graduation.

She married Paul Mayfield on May 31, 1943, in Cherokee, Oklahoma. A few years later they moved to Alva where

Paul went into farming with his father in law. For the next 15 years, Velma was a homemaker, bookkeeper and sometimes harvest assistant for Paul in the farming business. About 1958 Velma began a new career with NWSC eventually working in the business office as a cashier and bookkeeper. Later she was promoted to controller. Velma retired from NWSC in 1983 and moved to Edmond, Oklahoma.

Velma promptly took a 60-plus-day extended vacation with her sister Bemice and brother-in-law Everette to

Australia, New Zealand and surrounding areas. Upon returning, Velma began a 30-plus-year career volunteering

at the Oklahoma Blood Institute with a group of women who affectionately referred to themselves as the "bag

ladies" (due to their paper bag lunches), assisting the OSBI in their blood drives and other activities.

Velma devoted the rest of her free time to her extensive flower garden, OU football, and voracious reading appetite.

Velma "retired" from the OSBI gig in 2015, but remained active with her other hobbies. Velma was also active

with the Tri-Sigma sorority to the extent her health would permit it.

Velma was preceded in death by her parents, George and Addie Keck, her husband Paul, her sons Douglas and

Jerry, granddaughter Donita Mayfield, her sister and brother in law, Bemice and Everette Walker, her niece

Jackie Walker, and several aunts, uncles and cousins.
