  • Another daunting election season approaches

Pastor Drew Kirtley, First Christian Church|Jan 19, 2024

I’m so tired. I don’t mean that I need a nap. I’m not really much of a nap taker. I don’t think it’s even physical tiredness. Today was just one of those long “mental” days. I know, I know: There are people who have it much harder than me. People work longer hours, with jobs that take much more of a physical toll on their bodies than mine does. But we’ve all been there. We’ve all had those days when we’re just “over it.” And it’s not even 2 p.m. yet. I read a news headline the other day about the election. The election… Now, I know I’m...

  • Are we worthy?

Steve Hamm, College Hill Church of Christ|Jan 19, 2024

What is our worth? I mean, are we really worthy of anything? There is an old saying about people we consider to be not worthy of much, it goes something like “they aren’t worth a plug nickel.” In the New Testament scriptures, the word “worthy” comes up a lot. Several of the Greek words used for the word “worthy” are defined as weight of value, or being sufficient, and being judged worthy. Now, the question sometimes comes up as Christians, “Are we worthy of Jesus Christ?” To this question, the answer is no, but Christ makes us worthy if we w...

  • Some of you are in trouble

    Jim Scribner|Jan 19, 2024

If you ever used the term "I'll do it when hell freezes over," better get ready to make good on it, because the time is now. In one of Marione's stories it said to not be afraid to take naps, because it would cause you to have a larger brain volume. With that theory and my napping abilities, my brain could overflow and explode at any time. I have had a moral conflict during this cold spell. I know there are people out there who at worst are hunkered down out in this cold or at best sleeping in...

Many of the Hillerman children’s neighbors and classmates were Pottawatomies. This interaction with Native Americans gave Tony much knowledge of Indian cultu...

  • Cold temperatures and a cold heart

    Doug Little|Jan 19, 2024

I feel like I need to put a disclaimer on about everything I write about because there are always people who think I am talking about them, and they get their knickers in a knot. So, if you didn’t go to church Sunday I am not talking about you. This column is more of an indictment on me and my cold heart. Brrrr, it is cold. I have spent the majority of the past two days, and will the next couple of days as well, outside and I can tell you with no chance of me lying even a little bit, that I am completely over winter. I’ve been watching the for...

  • Looks can be deceiving

    Dal Houston|Jan 19, 2024

I am always on the lookout for life experiences I can share that have irony or a catch – something that can teach a lesson differently or uniquely. Today’s story is one I was told years ago. One of my friends shared with me a tale about an experience he had, which always serves as a reminder that appearances can be misleading. This good friend of mine and some of his other friends went to Las Vegas for a bachelor party or something of the sort. While walking down the Las Vegas strip, this gro...
