  • Cherokee Strip Museum draws visitors from far and wide

    Rose Blunk|Oct 3, 2021

The Cherokee Strip Museum of Alva has made great strides over the last 20 years. At one time, the museum was one of the ‘best kept secrets in Alva.’ It sat up on the hill like a silent sentinel and kept its treasures ready for occasional visitors who would come to visit. Using social media has given the museum access to a wide area of clientele and brought many visitors to Alva and the museum. In earlier times, the museum drew around 5 or 10 visitors a month. During the just month of June this year, the museum boasted 132 visitors! They cam...

    Trevor Brown|Oct 3, 2021

Lawmakers will be returning to the State Capitol this fall for a special session to carry out the once-a-decade task of redrawing legislative and congressional boundaries. Gov. Kevin Stitt announced last week that he is calling lawmakers into a special session on Nov. 15 to solely focus on redistricting work that must be completed this year. State officials originally hoped to finish months ago. A delay from the U.S. Census Bureau in delivering the data caused states, including Oklahoma, to scramble to finish in time for the 2022 elections....

  • Corrections Department plans sign-on bonuses, temporary pay raises as prison staffing problems persist

    Keaton Ross, Oklahoma Watch|Oct 3, 2021

The Oklahoma Department of Corrections plans to provide a $2,500 sign-on bonus to newly hired prison officers and temporarily boost pay for employees working in especially understaffed facilities. The agency’s staffing levels have dropped significantly over the past year, resulting in officers working excessive overtime and decreased employee morale, corrections director Scott Crow told the state Board of Corrections on Wednesday afternoon. Oklahoma had 387 fully-funded, vacant correctional officer positions in June, according to budget d...

  • Coffeetime

    Andy and Renie Bowman|Oct 3, 2021

Ever got a case of the “guilts” for taking a few minutes to do absolutely nothing that contributes to your finances, your job, or your family – simply doing what you want because you like it? The guilts is a pretty common reaction in our American culture that believes in the axiom, “Waste not – want not.” Unless of course, you are a part of the fluffy subculture that feels “Having experiences in life is so much more valuable than having stuff.” (You know, boring stuff like a job, money, a h...

  • Here's to a good homecoming parade next Saturday

    Jim Scribner|Oct 3, 2021

One weatherman I watched said it would be perfect weather for the parade, but another said a 20% of rain. Curses on him for such talk! Congratulations to all the Miss Cinderella participants. Our homecoming football guests are the University of Arkansas at Monticello Weevils. I wonder why the bug people haven't pitched a fit about being insulted with the mascot name. It surely offends some thin-skinned people somewhere. I was very happy to see Linda Tutwiler is the parade marshal this year. I kn...

  • Democrats are only growing our debt, not the economy

    Sen. Jim Inhofe|Oct 3, 2021

Ever since President Biden took office, Democrats have made clear their intent to go on a reckless taxing and spending spree. Earlier this year, they passed $2 trillion in so-called relief spending that was supposed to grow the economy, but it has only grown our national debt. Republicans warned that excessive spending could lead to rampant inflation, and it has. According to a Fox News poll, 86 percent of Americans are concerned about inflation, and 79 percent say the government’s economic agenda is making things worse. Not even a year into h...

Alva was unable to score until the third quarter. The final was OCS 53, Alva 19. The Goldbugs managed to cut back on penalties following an excessive number in the Newkirk game. However, the OCS defense stymied Alva's rushing offense and several times the Goldbug receivers couldn't hold onto passes. A couple of Alva passes were picked off...

    ANDY TSUBASA FIELD|Oct 3, 2021

A school pandemic workgroup established by Gov. Laura Kelly received data from the Kansas Department of Health and Environment showing that in about a quarter of the state's counties, less than 20% of vaccine-eligible children ages 12 to 17 had received at least one dose as of Sept. 24. U.S. regulators in May expanded the use of Pfizer's COVID-19 vaccine to children as young as 1...

  • 'Everybody is frustrated,' Biden says as his agenda stalls

    LISA MASCARO and ZEKE MILLER|Oct 3, 2021

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Joe Biden on Saturday acknowledged frustrations as Democrats strain to rescue a scaled-back version of his $3.5 trillion government-overhaul plan and salvage a related public works bill after frantic negotiations failed to produce a deal. He pledged to "work like hell" to get the two pillars of his domestic agenda passed into law, but...
