What is your state of mind? This is something to consider this time of the year. Some people may be sad, some may be happy and excited, while others are out of their minds. People may experience all of those things at some time during this holiday season. I wonder what the state of mind was for Joseph and Mary? They were forced to travel at a time of year that may not have been the best. They could not find a place to stay. Not having a place for Mary to be comfortable while giving birth...
What is the most valuable item in this world today? Is it gold, silver or some precious stone? Maybe it’s a valuable piece of artwork or sports memorabilia, or a strategic parcel of land. There are a lot of highly intelligent people on this earth who own one or more of the afore mentioned things, but are they wise? I am reading the Book of Job in the Old Testament, and I was struck in awe by Chapter 28. Job describes how mankind goes searching far and wide for the things he considers valuable: gold, silver, ore, copper and all kinds of precious...
LAS VEGAS – Just a few days after making his final team-roping run of the 2023 ProRodeo season, Coleman Proctor was doing the things Coleman Proctor does. He was practicing and taking care of his daughters, Stella and Caymbree, while his wife, Stephanie, was working. When the horses and steers were put away, the three ventured to a movie; they had earned a break, and it was the perfect time for daddy-daughters bonding. In just a few months, the girls will welcome a little sister, so any time they get with Dad is special and important. It’s just...
How and when Oklahoma's hunting season dates are set can get complicated. But for the most part, hunting seasons are either the same date or the same weekend every year. For example, deer muzzleloader season opens the fourth Saturday in Oct. and runs for nine days through Sunday. And rabbit season opens Oct. 1 and runs through March 28. Why? The short answer is that is how it is written in Wildlife Commission resolution and Title 800 of Oklahoma State Statute (wildlife agency rules). These are the rules that govern things like bag limits,...
Looking at some of the more successful female drivers who participate in events sponsored by the National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) shows that several have won individual races but only four have won year-end championships. Too many women have won NHRA races for all of them to be profiled in this series of articles. But all of them (and several more who have participated without winning a race) are important to an examination of the topic. It is also worth repeating that one general theme is...
There are things that happen that I just don’t understand. Who decided square toed boots were cool? I mean really. Who decided Coke and Dr. Pepper was bad for you. Who decided the new body styles on Ford and Chevy and Dodge look good? Who decided cooking a steak any more done than medium rare was kosher? Who decided that cheese belonged on top of a baked potato? I mean cheese is life, but it doesn’t go on the top of a spud people! Who decided there was Taco Tuesdays but not Taco Fridays or Taco Thursdays. Who decided after the fifth bowl of...
In an article from the Wall Street Journal, Jason Gay recalls his year as an assistant youth soccer coach. As a doting grandparent, I have made many of the same observations. The objective of youth sports is to get your children some exercise while someone else yells at them. There are two styles of competition: The recreational league is for parents who want to drop kids off to run errands and relax. The traveling league is for those who enjoy bad coffee, deadlines and building up credit card...
OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma House Speaker Charles McCall, R-Atoka, has filed multiple pieces of legislation regarding personal income tax cuts ahead of the upcoming session of the Oklahoma Legislature. The bills are the latest in a series of tax cut plans that the House has filed and passed throughout the last three years. "Everyday Oklahomans continue to feel the effects of destructive federal economic policies on their wallet, and they desperately need relief," McCall said. "The House has passed numerous tax cut bills to the Senate during m...
Money from legal settlements against opioid manufacturers, distributors and retailers will finally start to trickle out to Oklahoma cities and counties in 2024, almost four years after lawmakers set up a board to administer the funds. More than 250 local governments told the Oklahoma Opioid Abatement Board they were interested in applying for the grants. The money is supposed to go toward treatment and recovery programs and opioid abuse education and prevention. The Opioid Abatement Board has about $27 million available for local communities,...
OKLAHOMA CITY – The Tobacco Settlement Endowment Trust (TSET) offers free resources to help Oklahomans achieve their New Year’s health resolutions through small daily steps, whether they are eating more nutritious foods, moving more or living tobacco free. TSET programs like the Oklahoma Tobacco Helpline and Shape Your Future help Oklahomans plan – and stay encouraged – to reach healthy goals. “The New Year is a great time to reflect on habits that can improve health and wellness,” said Julie Bisbee, Executive Director of TSET. “Whether th...

Russian officials on Saturday accused Ukrainian forces of shelling the Russian border city of Belgorod, a day after an 18-hour aerial Russian barrage across Ukraine killed at least 39 civilians. Two children were killed in Belgorod, regional governor Vyacheslav Gladkov said in a statement on social media. He also said that an unspecified number of people had been injured. While previous attacks on the region have generally taken place at night, images on social media showed flames in broad daylight in what appeared to be the heart of the city,...
BAGHDAD (AP) — Three overnight airstrikes on eastern Syria Saturday near a strategic border crossing with Iraq killed six Iran-backed militants, two members of Iraqi militia groups told The Associated Press. The strikes on the border region of Boukamal came hours after an umbrella group of Iran-backed Iraqi militants — known as the Islamic Resistance — claimed an attack on a U.S. military base in the city of Irbil in northern Iraq. The group has conducted over a hundred attacks on U.S. positions in Iraq and eastern Syria since the onset of th...
DEIR AL-BALAH, Gaza Strip (AP) — Israeli warplanes struck two urban refugee camps in central Gaza on Saturday, as the Biden administration approved a new emergency weapons sale to Israel despite persistent international cease-fire calls over mounting civilian deaths, hunger and mass displacement in the enclave. Israel says it is determined to pursue its unprecedented air and ground offensive until it has dismantled Hamas, a goal viewed by some as unattainable because of the militant group's deep roots in Palestinian society. The United S...
BILLINGS, Mont. (AP) — Since passage of the Endangered Species Act 50 years ago, more than 1,700 plants, mammals, fish, insects and other species in the U.S. have been listed as threatened or endangered with extinction. Yet federal government data reveals striking disparities in how much money is allocated to save various biological kingdoms. Of the roughly $1.2 billion a year spent on endangered and threatened species, about half goes toward recovery of just two types of fish: salmon and steelhead trout along the West Coast. Tens of m...
Fuzzy dice finally will be free to dangle in Illinois. Starting Monday, police there no longer will be allowed to pull over motorists solely because they have something hanging from the rearview mirror of the windshield. That means air fresheners, parking placards and, yes, even those dice are fair game to hang. The revised Illinois windshield rule is one of hundreds of new laws taking effect with the new year in states across the U.S. While some may seem a bit pedestrian, others have real practical effects or touch on controversial issues...
