It’s so intriguing how the scriptures in the Bible fit together so well, especially when it comes to the teachings of God. This next Beatitude in Matthew 5:9 says, “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.” I’ve often thought of this scripture as someone who barters peace between two warring factions, but as I study God’s Word, I believe it means that we ourselves are to be at peace, not only with God, but everyone around us. Peace is such a delicate thing, as in the example of two countries or just two ordinary...

Recently, senior Sterling Stewart went on a trip to the Oklahoma State Capitol. He served as a Senate page Feb. 19–22. While there he spent most of his time at the Capitol building doing things like distributing bills, attending committee meetings, getting things that the senators needed, and distributing "pink slips" (messages from lobbyists) to the senators during the meetings. There were five pages including Sterling. The pages worked from 7:45 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. each day except for the day t...
“Renaming the lowest-risk prostate cancers cuts down on overly aggressive treatment.” – Sumathi Reddi. According to an article in the Wall Street Journal, a doctor’s bedside manner suffers when they get right to the point, so some are not choosing to scare men with “The” word. A change in normal diagnosis has already taken place in certain other forms of cervical, thyroid, and bladder cancers: all having been reclassified as “Unlikely to spread.” Since the word “cancer” engenders so much a...
How do you navigate in this scary world? The way I see it, for most of us it is a matter of one of three possibilities. You either walk by sight – looking at what is in front of you and making a decision from what you see; by instinct – which I call pure gut reaction to things that have already happened in your life; or by trust in your Creator – the one who knows all, before it ever happens. Sight: your response to seeing what is actually out there, and then acting in your own best interests. E...
Often when I write an article, I generally know the answer to the question I am asking … in this case I do not have the answer, or at least all of it. Rather, I know the question, and I know the importance of the question … I just don’t know the answer to the question. The other day I read an article on the internet that discussed the word “happiness” and how it is so often misused. Some examples would be, find a job that makes you happy, and what you do for a living won’t be considered...
This week, we crossed the first deadline of the year and completed hearing Senate Bills in committee. Those that received approval from their assigned committees are now eligible to be heard on the Senate floor. We will shift our focus heavily to floor work over the next two weeks as we approach our deadline to pass Senate measures out of our chamber and send them across the rotunda to the House. One of the bills I am particularly looking forward to presenting pertains to 4-H students being given excused absences when participating in 4-H...
I was sure what I was going write about this week. I mean what else could I write about besides the fires? That was until Sunday school when I realized the two topics are more intertwined then one might think. Tuesday, hell was unleashed again on this part of the country. Fires sprang up north of Gate first and then south of Gate and fueled by massive fuel loads and winds of 50-60 miles an hour, the wildfire moved at a rapid speed east and then when the wind changed to the north, it moved rapidly south. This fire and the ones in the Texas...
Like most rock bands of the 1960s, The Cyrkle had a brief existence. As we noted last week, the group produced three albums and had six singles that made the rock charts. All of their hits were written by people who were not band members. But, like many bands of the 1960s, The Cyrkle had a creative force that wrote many of the songs the group recorded. The ensemble’s three albums included several songs each written by bandmates Don Dannemann and Tom Dawes. When the band broke up in 1968 and t...
Trump and Biden both got convincing wins. What amazes me is that people actually believe either of these men is fully capable of getting our country on the right path. Both have a shot at it and I'm not impressed with either one. Broadway Joe is a career politician, and the only reason he was chosen to run in the first place was to reward him for a lack-luster career doing what he was told and following blindly along. "The Donald" is a businessman with questionable morals, and the ability to...
