  • Summer is over

Rev. John Clapp, Bible Baptist Church|Sep 2, 2022

How do you mark the end of summer? Some look at Labor Day, others when it starts to cool. Some look at the start of school, and some hold to the official date. For me, it begins with the end of VBS, school starts, the county fair, and then the annual car show. I always like the change of the seasons. When people ask me what my favorite season is, it is always the in-betweens. The changing leaves, the first snow, the budding of Spring, and the first dip in the pool. I guess I enjoy change. Life is like a series of changing seasons. One person de...

  • Slow down, make the moment last

Steve Hamm, College Hill Church of Christ|Sep 2, 2022

Simon and Garfunkel sang a song titled “The 59th Street Bridge Song” (Feelin’ Groovy), released in 1966. The premise of this song was to slow down and take life a little slower or a little more easy. What a busy time of the year it is. School has just started, and the schedule is quickly getting filled up. Sometimes our lives seem to be going so fast that we often miss some very important events that could impact our lives in a positive way. Only when those events are past do we sometimes look back and say, “Darn, I missed that opportu...

  • JEREMY NEWTON TUNE

    Sep 2, 2022

Jeremy Newton, son of Robbie (Stephens) Diefenbach and Clyde W. Tune, was born on February 12, 1979, in Enid, Oklahoma, and passed away in Tulsa, Oklahoma, on August 28, 2022, at the age of 43 years, 6 months and 16 days. Jeremy Newton Tune was the kind of guy that never met a stranger. If he had a roof over his head, you had one over yours. The kind of friend you could always count on to be there. One phone call away and he could either fix your problems (especially if they were mechanical),...

  • Juices

    Arden Chaffee|Sep 2, 2022

When our daughters were young, apple juice was a favorite. There has always been discussion about the value of juice in the diet, because most are high in sugar, contain acids harmful to the tooth enamel, and since most are filtered, are low in fiber. An article in The American Legion Magazine discusses juice as part of a healthy diet. A popular brand, V-8, so named because it contained 8 different vegetable juices, used the ad: “Drink your vegetables.” We all know that fruits and veg...

  • Random Thoughts

    Roger Hardaway|Sep 2, 2022

In the fall of 1970, Jesse Hill Ford had lived in Humboldt, Tennessee, for more than a decade, and he had become well-known in the town. He had also become financially successful after several years of struggle. He and his family lived on the edge of town in a large two-story house that the Fords had built on 27 acres of land. They enjoyed entertaining friends and visitors in their imposing spacious residence. But all was not rosy. The Fords’ marriage was shaky and their son, Charles, was b...

    Sep 2, 2022

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — A body found near an Oklahoma lake 14 years ago has been identified, according to the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation. The remains are those of Angela Mason, 25, and were identified after a DNA sample from the body was used to find a possible relative. The DNA from the body was compared to DNA from the relative and confirmed Mason's identity, the OSBI said. Mason's body was found Aug. 31, 2008, in a shallow grave near Lake Thunderbird by fishermen. OVERLAND PARK, Kan. (AP) — The Republican candidate for governor in Kansas said Thursday that if he is elected he will respect voters' overwhelming rejection of an amendment that would have removed the right to abortion from the state's constitution. Attorney General Derek Schmidt, who is seeking to oust Democratic Gov. Laura Kelly, said the Aug. 2 vote in which voters rejected the proposed amendment by a 41% to 59% margin, means his priority will be upholding abortion laws already in force in the state, The Kansas City Star reported. When a...

    Sep 2, 2022

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — Legalized sports betting arrived in Kansas on Thursday, with wagers being taken at state-owned casinos and via mobile apps. The "soft launch" of sports betting in Kansas comes after Democratic Gov. Laura Kelly signed a bill in May that the Republican-controlled Legislature passed with bipartisan support. The launch meets a goal set by state officials to have the operations running by Sept. 1, in time for the first NFL games. An official launch of the operations is scheduled for Sept. 8. Bettors must be in Kansas to place t...

    Sep 2, 2022

ROCKPORT, Mass. (AP) — When Laura Hernandez fell into the water and lost her iPhone while paddleboarding off Massachusetts earlier this month, she figured it was probably gone for good. But the next day the New York woman returned to the Rockport beach and approached the instructor of a novice scuba diving class and told him her situation. Instructor Larry Bettencourt told her the odds of finding it, even with its distinctive pink case, were not good, but he told the class to keep an eye out for it, The Boston Globe reported Thursday. • Mississippi capital's water disaster developed over decades

    EMILY WAGSTER PETTUS|Sep 2, 2022

JACKSON, Miss. (AP) — For at least the third time in a dozen years, portable toilets are parked outside the ornate Mississippi Capitol because Jackson's water system is in crisis. The big "Gotta Go" trailer is just one example of the city's desperation. Many homes, businesses and government offices have had little or no running water this week, forcing people to wait in long lines for drinking water or water to flush toilets. The scenes testify to the near collapse of a water system that residents could not trust even in the best of times. T...
