  • How's your faith doing?

Steve Hamm, College Hill Church of Christ|May 24, 2024

In Matthew chapter 8, verses 5-13, there is an incredible story told of a soldier who comes to Jesus to seek his healing power. Jesus had just come down off the mountain after preaching the most powerful sermon in history! This centurion has a servant whom he loved and had an incredible trust in. He simply describes to Jesus that his servant is paralyzed and greatly suffering. Jesus responds to him by asking the centurion if he would like him to come and heal him. The centurion then tells Jesus that he is not worthy to have Jesus come under...

  • Ancient recipes

    Arden Chaffee|May 24, 2024

Secret recipes, like Kentucky Fried Chicken’s 11 herbs and spices and Bush’s Baked Beans, are not so secret anymore. Mass production requires some “fiddling” with ingredients to meet consistency, packaging and safety requirements, leading to a loss of originality. Grandma’s home cooking, quoting a local TV advertisement, was “often imitated but seldom duplicated.” Collecting cookbooks is a popular hobby, a step back in time. Ancient recipes provide a fascinating glimpse into the culinary trad...

  • Planners, NPers and FPers

    Andy and Renie Bowman|May 24, 2024

Some of us are Planners. Meticulous and rather ridiculous methodical planners, we spend a lot of time laying out our life like a checkerboard square. We know what we will be doing today, this week, next month and exactly where we plan to be on our checkerboard by the end of the year. We have car insurance, home insurance, life insurance, loss of income insurance, and probably insurance for not having insurance. There is a plan in place for every piece of life. You better believe that we have...

  • Life lessons from a wayward cow – part 1

    Dal Houston|May 24, 2024

Yesterday my son and I spent several hours on horseback, riding through canyons, grass and weeds taller than our heads, through brush, trees, thickets and deep-steep streams, trying to corral and reunite a cow that inadvertently got lost from her calf. That evening, I had to remove four ticks that decided I was a good home. Through this ordeal I was thinking about all the life lessons we could take away from this cow and her struggle. At best count, there are three. Lesson One: If you have never...

  • Leaks, spare parts and Butker's speech

    Doug Little|May 24, 2024

A couple of things really caught my attention this week. Well, more than a couple but there is only enough room to express my thoughts on a couple of them. First, I fixed a water leak for a lady underneath her kitchen sink. It was a conglomeration of galvanized pipe, copper tubing, PVC and pex. It kinda looked like a little kid had gone crazy with his Legos underneath there. There was about 15 too many fittings under there and as you know the more fittings used the more chance of a leak and when I got there, a couple leaks had sprouted and...

  • Tall orders, part 4

    Roger Hardaway|May 24, 2024

As we saw last week, Martin Van Buren Bates was an imposing figure, standing 7 feet, 9 inches tall and weighing 475 pounds. Some sources, however, say that he was even larger in both height and weight than those statistics indicate. He grew so fast that measurements recorded in one instance might be outdated a few months or years later. Regardless of exactly how tall he was and how much he weighed, all sources agree that he was huge. When the Civil War began in April 1861, Bates was 23 years...

  • Let's all have a good Memorial Day weekend

    Jim Scribner|May 24, 2024

It's kind of different this year because Cleo isn't here to mastermind getting the flowers out for me. I think Jennifer and Grace have been helping/doing it for a few years, so it will be done right. Cleo never would let me pick up the flowers to use again, because she said everyone deserved new ones every year. One time we were at a store closing and she bought enough discount sprays and flowers to last several years. The next spring when I went to get them out, someone had stolen every one of...
