  • Burlington School News: COVID-19 restrictions versus online schooling

    Aaron Peffly|Oct 2, 2020

COVID-19 has affected this school year in many ways. There have been restrictions put on the students' privileges for their protection. Before entering buses or the school, the student's temperature has to be taken. For now the students eat breakfast and lunch in their classrooms with their class sponsor, and cannot leave campus or go to the gym. The students sit in assigned seats during each class and classrooms must be sanitized between classes. Students also bring water bottles since the...

  • Certain Bible truths for uncertain days

Pastor John Clapp, Bible Baptist Church|Oct 2, 2020

This year has undoubtedly been interesting. It reminds me of a roller coaster. You slowly ascend, then downward you go, twisting every which way. The problem is that the ride keeps joining! Disease, economic uncertainties, ineffective government leaders, west coast fires and Caribbean hurricanes, and even murderous hornets! And to think that we have three months to go in 2020. This year has reminded me of several important Biblical truths. One must turn to the Lord during uncertain times. The...

  • Investing

    Arden Chaffee|Oct 2, 2020

There are some interesting changes in the markets and investment opportunities due to the stimulus infusions of cash, with another package on the horizon. The treasury has cut short-term interest rates and has spent billions of dollars on bonds. That’s bad news for long-term investors and good news for long-term borrowers. Some interesting effects of the current pandemic started with toilet paper and spread to a national coin shortage. Could we really run out of quarters, dimes and nickels? T...

  • Murdock's Minutes

    Sen. Casey Murdock|Oct 2, 2020

This past week, an interim study I requested on the rules and regulations for Oklahoma meat processing facilities was held at the state Capitol. I believe increasing investment in these businesses will lead to more jobs and opportunities for rural Oklahoma. We talked about the need for more inspectors and we also heard about the need for more resources to assist in expansion and employee retention. These facilities are vital to our economy and to our nation’s food chain. I want to thank Gov. Kevin Stitt for his recent visit to the Panhandle t...

  • Random Thoughts

    Roger Hardaway|Oct 2, 2020

With the 2020 election fast approaching, we must note that this year marks the 100th anniversary of the addition of the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. That provision stipulates that the right to vote shall be extended to women. In fact, a few states had allowed women voting rights prior to 1920, but the amendment made it so that no state could deny suffrage to anyone based upon gender. Amending the Constitution requires action by both the U.S. and state governments. Proposed...

  • Burlington School News: Students compete at Alfalfa County Fair

    Karlie Heatherman|Oct 2, 2020

There were several Burlington FFA members and 4-H members who participated in the Alfalfa County Fair Sept. 3–5 this year. More students showed a livestock animal this year than years before. The youngest student was a kindergartner, all the way up to some junior students. There was concern that the fair would not happen this year due to COVID-19. Thankfully, the students were able to show the animals they spent so much time and money on. Students were also able to enter other fair projects a...

    Preston Paschall|Oct 2, 2020

Burlington counselor Gayle McNett has been meeting with the class, trying to get ACTs scheduled, helping the students with scholarships and college applications, as well as figuring out their future plans. Many students were not able to take the ACT last spring. The Burlington Senior Class of...

It is an extremely rare form of cancer. The people who helped her go through her procedure were her sisters in the Kansas City area; one of them was on the phone with her almost every day. She also talked to her dad a lot. Her boyfriend, Lloyd, took her to each one of her doctor appointments. Her church also helped her. For her...

It is hosted to give back to the community, as the community helps fund many of the FFA chapter's projects. The local Service with a Splash was held on Aug. 25 after school. For the activities this year, FFA members washed fire trucks, mowed and cleaned picnic tables at the park, cleared brush in a community member's garden, and swept the fire station. STEVE PEOPLES and BILL BARROW|Oct 2, 2020

An election year already defined by a cascade of national crises descended further into chaos Friday, with President Donald Trump quarantined at a military hospital with the coronavirus after consistently playing down the threat. Democratic challenger Joe Biden took down his attack ads and pressed a bipartisan message in battleground Michigan after he and his wife tested negative. "This cannot be a partisan moment. It must be an American moment. We have to come together as a nation," Biden declared at a speech in Grand Rapids, warning that the...

  • Trump, stricken by COVID-19, flown to military hospital

    ZEKE MILLER and JILL COLVIN|Oct 2, 2020

WASHINGTON (AP) — Stricken by COVID-19, a feverish and fatigued President Donald Trump was flown to a military hospital Friday night after being injected with an experimental drug combination in treatment at the White House. In a day of whipsaw events, the president who has spent months downplaying the threat of the virus was forced to cancel all campaign events a month before the election as he fought a virus that has killed more than 205,000 Americans and is hitting others in his orbit as well. The White House said Trump's expected stay of "...

    Oct 2, 2020

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — Sen. James Lankford of Oklahoma said Friday that he was quarantining after meeting with a Utah senator who tested positive for COVID-19. In a tweet, Lankford said that he had met several times this week with fellow Republican Mike Lee, who announced earlier Friday that he had contracted the disease caused by the coronavirus. His office did not immediately respond to request for c...

  • A different tune for college marching bands in a pandemic

    CLIFF BRUNT|Oct 2, 2020

NORMAN, Okla. (AP) — As the Oklahoma marching band's rendition of "Sweet Victory" filled Memorial Stadium, everything was in place on the field. More than 300 Pride of Oklahoma members formed a perfect pattern from one goal line to the other during an elaborate performance for the game against Kansas State. The sharp tweet of a whistle kicked off songs from familiar TV shows. Crimson and cream flags waved in unison under the stadium's bright lights. One critical element was absent — a crowd, unless you count a few carboard cutouts. Instead of...

  • Months later, still no charges after car drove into protest

    Oct 2, 2020

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — The Douglas County district attorney's office is still deciding whether to file charges for two incidents earlier this year where vehicles drove into protests in Lawrence. The Lawrence Journal-World reports that meanwhile, at least three defendants have been charged for similar allegations that weren't protest-related. On May 31, video showed a woman accelerating an SUV into protesters during a march against police brutality. On June 29, another woman drove an SUV through protesters' makeshift barricades and into a c...

  • Tenants, landlords urge reform on Oklahoma's eviction laws

    Oct 2, 2020

TULSA, Okla. (AP) — Oklahoma lawmakers have come under pressure from advocates for tenant and landlord rights to reform the state's eviction laws. Oklahoma courts last year handled 44,612 eviction cases, with more than 1,200 tenants a month receiving eviction notices in Tulsa County alone, according to Tulsa World. Tulsa has the 11th highest eviction rate in the country. "Eviction is a pox on both houses," Michael Figgins, the executive director of Legal Aid Services of Oklahoma, told a House of Representatives committee hearing Thursday. "...
