  • Alva Masons hold breakfast for students

    James A. Marples|Nov 17, 2019

I was glad to read the article in the Alva Review-Courier: "Masonic Pancake Benefit for AHS" (Nov 15 issue). It is great that the Masons (of which I am a fifth-generation member) are holding a benefit breakfast in which proceeds will help fund Alva students to take a trip to Washington, D.C., to tangibly learn about our nation's history up close and personal. I applaud that. My connections to Alva run deep and, by coincidence, my own school principal in Kansas (where I grew up) was "Mister Mike Zakoura,” as students called him, but his f...

  • I heard Elvis singing 'Blue Christmas' the other day; I must have missed Thanksgiving

    Jim Scribner|Nov 17, 2019

We are on the way to having a go at impeaching “the Donald.” I am not convinced that he has done enough to be impeached. Others have done worse, I am sure. Maybe he should have been censured and then told to be on his best behavior for the rest of his term. That would have saved millions of dollars that are needed elsewhere and still gotten the point across. The first day, according to the Republican analysis, did not have the bang to look credible. So far, it has been like a bunch of 10 yea...

    Marilynn Marchione|Nov 17, 2019

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — People with severe but stable heart disease from clogged arteries may have less chest pain if they get a procedure to improve blood flow rather than just giving medicines a chance to help, but it won't cut their risk of having a heart attack or dying over the following few years, a big federally funded study found. The results challenge medical dogma and call into question some of the most common practices in heart care. They are the strongest evidence yet that tens of thousands of costly stent procedures and bypass o...
